A Universiti Malaya (UM) thesis briefing and a journal author guide often name the same few styles — APA, Vancouver, Nature, or an IEEE-class numeric format — then add a faculty wrinkle in the handbook. Common styles for Malaysian theses and journals
Malaysian faculties rarely invent a wholly new citation system. They name a common academic style and then add layout or punctuation notes. Lattuce ships thirty curated starters. The exact picker labels live in supported citation formats — do not treat the table below as a faculty-by-faculty CSL list.

Other catalog matches that often appear in Malaysian author guides: MLA 9th and Chicago (author-date) for humanities; AMA, The Lancet, BMJ, and PLOS for clinical journals; ACS, Science, and Cell for lab sciences; publisher houses such as Springer Basic, Wiley, Elsevier Harvard, and SAGE Harvard when the journal says “follow our house style.”
Numeric in-text markers (as shipped): IEEE, Vancouver, AMA, ACS, Nature, Science, Cell, The Lancet, BMJ, and PLOS. The rest are typically author–date or note styles as labeled in the picker.
If the handbook names a style that is not in the catalog, pick the closest starter, lock it for drafting, and plan a last-mile edit in Word. Do not invent an obscure faculty CSL in Lattuce.
How to preview and pick a style in Writer
Use preview while you are still choosing (APA vs Vancouver, Harvard vs a journal house style). Lock the paper style when Compose chips, the References strip, and Word export should stay in sync. The citation style preview guide covers prefill order and copy buttons in more detail.
- Open the paper in Write.
- In the References strip at the bottom of the editor (wide layouts), open the Citation style control. On narrower layouts, the same control is under More in the paper header.
- Click Preview to open Citation style preview.
- Type in Search styles… — names such as
apa,vancouver,nature, orieeefilter the list. - Compare the live In-text citation and Bibliography entry for the same metadata. Copy either string if you need it in email or a supervisor comment.
- Click Use this style to save that choice on the paper, or change the style dropdown next to Preview to set it without the dialog.
The preview can prefill from Details, from a source you marked for compose, or from a built-in sample. Edits you type inside the preview are for comparison only — they do not save to your bibliography. Save metadata in Details when the library record should change.
Path A — Thesis chapter (often author–date)
Best when the faculty handbook names APA or Harvard for a UM-style thesis.
Search APA 7th or Harvard, preview a journal article and a book chapter from your library, then lock the style before you draft the next chapter. Switching later is fine in Lattuce; your Word template may still need a manual pass.
Path B — Clinical or Nature-family journal (numeric)
Best when you are turning a thesis chapter into a manuscript for a medical or life-science journal.
Search Vancouver (Elsevier), Nature, The Lancet, BMJ, or PLOS. In-text markers become numeric. Lock the style before Compose so chips match the journal’s habit, then export (sources to DOCX).
Path C — Engineering thesis or IEEE journal
Best when the faculty or venue uses numbered citations in the IEEE family.
Search IEEE, preview a conference paper and a journal article, and lock the style so [1]-style markers stay consistent through export.
Faculty handbook caveats
Handbooks win. Lattuce ships curated starters, not every faculty file on a graduate-school website.
- Read the named style first. If the guide says APA 7th, lock APA 7th. If it says Vancouver, lock Vancouver. Preview a real source from your library so punctuation matches what you expect.
- Faculty-specific CSL is often unique. A school may publish its own
.cslor a Word reference template that is not in the thirty-style catalog. Pick the closest starter, keep writing, then export to Word and adjust the last mile. - CSL formatting is not a copy-edit. Ahead-of-print articles, supplements, statutes, and pinpoint cites often need a human pass. The supported formats post lists honest limits.
- Citation checks are not style. A correctly styled
(Lee, 2021)or[1]is not proof the sentence matches the source. That check lives in Compose — see the literature review guide. - EN↔MS is not a citation style. Many Malaysian theses need bilingual abstracts or a Bahasa Melayu chapter. That is a translation workflow — bilingual journal abstracts and thesis chapter translation — not a second item in the style picker.

Format ≠ citation style. Students mix these up because both appear near submission.

Format mode today ships the UM Thesis Formatting Checklist (BM/BI) for cover, title page, preliminary pages, main body, and back matter. That checklist can flag APA-like or numeric shapes as advisory only. It does not lock APA, Vancouver, or Nature for you, and it never auto-passes references.
Typical order:
- Lock a citation style and write with cite chips.
- Approve sections and export a cited thesis chapter to Word.
- Upload that

If the faculty wants a unique bibliography file, do the citation last-mile in Word after export. Do not wait for Format mode to invent a custom style.
