Why Lattuce is not trying to replace Notion
Lattuce complements team wikis — we defend academic PDF grounding, citations, collaborative translation, and cloud research workflows instead of org-wide PM.
Teams ask whether Lattuce competes with Notion. Our answer is deliberate: different job, different buyer — and many labs use both.
Lattuce at lattuce.app is the research-and-writing layer for PDFs, citations, missions, and Word export. Notion is the team wiki and project surface for runbooks, databases, and everyday planning.

Two stacks
| Stack | Tool | Typical owner |
|---|---|---|
| Team operations | Notion | Lab manager, ops, undergrad coordinators |
| Research corpus | Lattuce | Graduate students, PIs, bilingual authors |
Notion wins blocks, databases, and real-time editing on every page. Lattuce wins grounded compose, citation verification, literature missions, and section approval → Word.
We do not market “rip out Notion and move your whole lab.” We market “keep Notion for wiki; write papers in Lattuce.”
What we defend
These are the capabilities we invest in — not Notion parity:
| Capability | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| PDF grounding | Claims tied to extracted text, not chat memory |
| Citation checks | Verifier before export |
| Research missions | Reviewable synthesis and .bib export |
| Section approval | Export integrity for theses and journals |
| Collaborative translation | Bilingual papers linked to Writer |
| Workspace Ask | Q&A over vault + library + paper — household scoped |
| Study digest | Audio, tables, mind maps from your PDFs |

What we do not chase
| Notion / market feature | Lattuce stance |
|---|---|
| Org-wide wiki replacement | Complement — Using Lattuce alongside Notion |
| Real-time co-edit on paper sections | Deferred — approval vs co-edit |
| Miro-scale workshop facilitation | Notes whiteboards + query canvas, not Engage parity |
| Formula/automation marketplace | Out of scope |
| “Replace Word” marketing | Word is an export target, not the authoring enemy |

When to use both
Practical split many Malaysian and bilingual labs already run:
- Notion — meeting notes, SOPs, hiring checklists, undergrad onboarding.
- Lattuce — PDF library, literature review missions, thesis chapters, EN↔MS translation.
- Links — Notion pages point to Lattuce papers; Lattuce does not need to mirror every Notion database.
| Need | Use |
|---|---|
| “Where is the lab safety PDF?” | Notion |
| “Write chapter 2 with verified citations” | Lattuce |
| “Shared vocabulary for Malay reading class” | Lattuce Learner at lingo.lattuce.app |
Bottom line
If you need a team workspace, Notion (or similar) is still the right default. If you need cited academic output from a PDF corpus, Lattuce is the layer we build — on purpose, without pretending to be both.
