How Bring Your Own Key works on Lattuce — add your provider keys in account settings, control model spend, and keep research AI under your policy.

Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) means you add your own LLM API keys in Lattuce account settings — DeepSeek, OpenAI, or another provider you choose. AI requests go from lattuce.app to your provider, not through a single vendor-chosen model.

What BYOK powers
BYOK unlocks AI across the research stack:
- Writer compose — citation-verified drafting with citation checks
- Study and Revise — grounded chat over your library and paper sources
- Digest artifacts — audio script, data table, mindmap from a collection
- Workspace Ask — cross-vault Q&A when keys are configured
- Research missions — evidence-backed catalog discovery (Pro tier when billing is enabled)
Without keys, Writer, Notes, and Library still run. Study and compose surfaces show clear banners when AI is unavailable — no silent failures.
What BYOK enables
- Provider choice — cost, latency, and data-processing terms that fit your lab or household
- No model lock-in — swap keys without migrating vault or paper slugs
- Policy alignment — use providers approved for unpublished or sensitive corpus
- AI-optional workflow — keep working without keys for non-AI surfaces
What BYOK is not
BYOK is not a bypass for subscription tiers when billing is enabled. Plan gates (for example AI missions on Pro) still apply even if you supply your own API keys. See pricing for public tier transparency.
Setup
- Sign in at lattuce.app.
- Open Account settings and add at least one LLM provider key.
- Open Study or compose — grounded features should respond when keys are valid.

Why BYOK matters for academic research
Fast-digest SaaS tools (for example NotebookLM) optimize upload-and-chat on the vendor’s infrastructure and keys. Lattuce Study offers similar grounded chat and digest artifacts — then continues into whiteboards, citation-verified Writer compose, missions, and Word export at lattuce.app.
BYOK is how you keep model policy under your control. Pair it with BYOS when you also want attached cloud storage options for blobs.
