Bilingual journal abstracts with Lattuce and collaborative translation
Workflow for EN/MS (or other locale pairs) journal abstracts — segment review, TM reuse, and consistent terminology.
Journals often require abstracts in two languages — English plus Malay, Arabic, or another locale. Short text is high stakes: one wrong term in the abstrak can sink an otherwise solid submission.
Lattuce treats abstracts like any other segment-based translation on lattuce.app — with translation memory, glossary locks, and author review before export.

Audience split
| Role | Responsibility |
|---|---|
| Corresponding author | Writes EN abstract in Writer; syncs segments |
| Bilingual co-author or translator | Produces target-language abstract in translation editor |
| PI | Approves terminology for lab-specific methods |
Workflow overview
- Draft the English abstract in Writer (often the last section you lock before submit).
- Sync abstract paragraphs as segments to a translation project.
- Translator produces target text with TM + glossary assistance.
- Author reviews imported segments side-by-side with EN.
- Export abstract block into the journal Word template or copy into the publisher portal.

Why segment-based translation
| Approach | Risk on abstracts |
|---|---|
| Paste into Google Translate | No TM; inconsistent with thesis abstrak you already wrote |
| Email Word file back and forth | Version drift; no glossary |
| Segment TM in Lattuce | Reuse “materials and methods” phrases; audit trail per sentence |
Abstracts are short enough to review line-by-line — segment UI matches that discipline.
Extract abstract segments
- Open the paper in Writer.
- Isolate the Abstract section (and Abstrak heading if your template uses both).
- Translate mode → sync segments for target locale (e.g. ms).
- Add glossary entries for non-negotiable terms (drug names, statistical tests, institution names).
If the abstract cites numbers from the full paper, keep figures in EN — only translate narrative sentences unless the journal requires otherwise.
Translation review loop
- Translator completes segments in the editor.
- Author opens Translate mode — compare EN source column vs target column.
- Flag awkward academic register; fix before import.
- Re-sync if EN abstract changes after peer review — TM highlights what must be re-translated.
AI suggestions from machinery are drafts, not submissions.
Quality checks before submit
| Check | Action |
|---|---|
| Word count | Journal limit per language — trim before export |
| Keywords | Translate or transliterate per author guidelines |
| Terminology | Matches thesis abstrak if you already published BM version |
| Names | Proper nouns unchanged unless journal style says otherwise |
| Citations | Abstracts usually have none — remove stray cite chips |
Export the bilingual abstract into your thesis format check Word file if faculty requires one combined PDF.
EN↔MS as example pair
Malaysian journals frequently ask for English abstract + Malay abstrak. The same workflow covers Arabic, Chinese, or other pairs — configure target locale in the translation project; keep EN as the authoring source in Writer.
